Civil War veteran Thomas Lockwood had survived the Battle of Antietam and the Battle of Gettysburg, but his tombstone was not as hardy. All that remained of the Union soldier's legacy was a weathered slab of rock, ravaged by wind and rain until the engraved name had blended away into the natural cracks.
