Scarcely three generations ago, when popular New York governor Al Smith became the first Roman Catholic to win a major-party nomination for president, his religion became a magnet for bigotry. Enemies circulated photos of New York's Holland Tunnel, labeling it a tunnel to Rome so Smith could easily get orders from the pope.
