An African American named Henry L. Small purchased the land in 1882, when he was listed in the Charleston City Directories as a “scavenger” and “cartman.” By 1910, Small was working as a truck driver for I.M. Pearlstine & Sons, a carriage, buggy, and grocery business on East Bay Street.
