Don McLean declared in his ballad "American Pie" that Feb. 3, 1959 — the day Buddy Holly was killed in a plane crash — was "the day the music died." But, in fact, the music lived. His presence in music history has spawned so many tributaries that sometimes the source has been taken for granted.
