ContributorNetwork - COMMENTARY | In the current political climate in Washington, little is getting done due to the extreme partisanship on both sides of the political aisle. However, the extremism driving the conservative side -- the so-called fiscally responsible tea party -- is pushing the nation to the brink of governmental shutdown, default on government debt for the first time in the nation's history, and further economic hardship (possibly risking a drop back into economic recession and, by extension, worldwide recession, if not outright depression). And it is being carried out via the misinformation that not raising the legal borrowing limit, the debt ceiling, will cause only the stoppage of government spending and stop the accumulation of national debt.
