Investor's Business Daily - Talking on cell phones increases both pedestrian deaths and those of drivers and passengers, say 2 studies by N.J.'s Rutgers Univ. that looked at U.S. phone use and accidents from '75 to '02. The researchers say mobiles initially had a "life-taking effect" when there were fewer than 1 mil phones and people were still adjusting to them. Then cells had a "life-saving effect" in the early '90s as usage grew and they let people call 911 right after wrecks. But as phones hit a critical mass of 100 mil, the increased accidents overshadowed the 911 benefits.
